The Spanish designer’s fanciful pieces are two metres tall. Also look out for Size & Matter. This time around, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has been commissioned to design a temporary structure outside the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank. | INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE ROTTERDAM 24 SEPTEMBER – 10 JANUARY The main event of the fourth architecture biennale in Rotterdam is the exhibition Open City: Designing Coexistence at the Netherlands Architecture Institute with works by a host of international architects, artists and critics. EXPERIMENTA DESIGN: IT’S ABOUT TIME … 9 SEPTEMBER – 8 NOVEMBER Lisbon’s Experimenta Design, the international biennale, takes a long look at “time” this year. What is time? Is time a luxury or a necessity? Focused around exhibitions, talks and film screenings, the highlights this year include the graphic design exhibition Quick, Quick, Slow, curated by Emily King, and The Pace of Design, which follows seven design studios across the globe. SUNNY MEMORIES 23-30 SEPTEMBER This exhibition is the culmination of an international workshop exploring the future of solar energy. Students from California College of the Arts, ECAL, ENSCI and the Royal College of Art explore the potential of solar energy in daily life. Led by a host of international designers such as Yves Béhar and Sam Hecht, the students have invented concepts which look to the future of solar energy, as well as products ready for use today.
