The city-wide biennial will take over London for 19 days this summer under the banner The Welcoming City (a nod to the 2012 Olympic slogan, London Welcomes the World). The festival will focus on different London neighbourhoods across three weekends: the West End; High Street 2012 (the route through the East End from the City to the Olympic site); and the Bankside Urban Forest. Core events include the International Architecture Student Festival, Love Your Street and Open Studios, for which designers open their offices to the public. There will also be a plethora of fringe activities including talks, debates, guided tours and a folded bike race.

INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE ROTTERDAM EXPERIMENTA DESIGN: IT’S ABOUT TIME SUNNY MEMORIES

Design Miami/Basel in Switzerland is back once again. The highlights of the event, where some of the world’s best design galleries exhibit, will be the commissioned projects by the Designers of the Future Award-winners. They all have a strong interest in digital design and include Berlin-based studio Beta Tank, London artist Graham Hudson, Boston-LA duo Zigelbaum & Coelho and London-Berlin practice Random International.

1:1 – ARCHITECTS BUILD SMALL SPACES
15 JUNE – 30 AUGUST
The Victoria and Albert Museum has commissioned seven architects to build their first structures in the UK. Architects from Japan (Terunobu Fujimori and Sou Fujimoto ), Brazil, India and Norway have designed spaces of retreat within the museum. Built at full size, visitors can enjoy the pieces first hand – a far cry from the mediated experience of drawings and models found elsewhere in the institution.

RCA SHOW TWO
23 JUNE – 4 JULY
The annual Royal College of Art show is a good place to uncover the next generation of designers. This year’s crop no doubt hopes to emulate the success of 2009 graduate Min-Kyu Choi, whose folding plug went on to win the Brit Insurance Design of the Year award. This time around, Arriva Routemaster buses will ferry visitors from the show in Kensington to the brand new painting and sculpture department in Battersea.
