DESIGN INDABA 2010 24-28 FEBRUARY This will be a big year for South Africa, what with hosting the FIFA World Cup in the summer, but before that the design community descends on Cape Town for the 15th Design Indaba conference and expo in February. A welcome escape from the northern hemisphere’s winter, the Indaba has a great record of bringing together interesting speakers for an enlightening programme. This year we expect Alejandro Aravena, Troika, Tord Boontje and the Bouroullecs to deliver talks on their latest projects. And if listening to some of the world’s most prominent designers and architects starts to get a bit much, just head to the beach. | BRIT INSURANCE DESIGN AWARDS 2010 17 FEBRUARY – 6 JUNE The Design Museum’s annual awards have become a fixture on the calendar, with an exhibition of the year’s most influential and forward-thinking designs from around the world. Last year’s winner was the unofficial Barack Obama poster campaign by Shepard Fairey. We suspect that Konstantin Grcic’s 360 chair and Zaha Hadid’s Maxxi museum in Rome will be on the shortlist this time around. Design Museum, London www.designmuseum.org |
STOCKHOLM FURNITURE FAIR 9-13 FEBRUARY Scandinavia’s biggest furniture fair is usually a good sneak preview of new launches ahead of Milan. This year, the guest of honour is Sir Paul Smith who will lend his sartorial eye to the entrance of the fair. Expect stripes. The exhibition space for emerging designers, Greenhouse, will be designed by Swedish newcomer Jens Fager who has made a name for himself with crudely cut wooden furniture. And the VIP bar (pictured) is designed by Jonas Wagell. Stockholmsmässan, Stockholm www.www.stockholm furniturefair.com |
