From July 1, all pre-packaged organic products in Europe will carry a new logo – designed by German student Dusan Milenkovic
Milenkovic’s design (above) was chosen after 130,000 people voted online to decide between three finalists after a pan-European contest open to art and design students. It was the overwhelming favourite with 63% of votes cast.
Nearly 3,500 logo designs were submitted (you can see some here) which were whittled down to the final three for a public vote by a jury which included Erik Spiekermann.
In second place (with 27% of votes) was this design

While this one came third (with 10%)

Milenkovic gets €6,000, with €3,500 and €2,500 going to the second and third place designers respectively.
The Euro-leaf logo “will be obligatory on all pre-packaged organic products that have been produced in any of the EU Member States and meet the necessary standards” says the EU.
A lot of readers may well be unhappy with the idea of running a public competition to come up with any logo but, in this case, MIlenkovic has come up with a simple, elegant solution and, for that, should be applauded.
