MILAN FURNITURE FAIR 22-27 APRIL The Milan furniture fair is a bit like an endurance test for the design community. How much design can you take in and how much networking can you do on as little sleep and food as possible? And can you still form a coherent opinion at the end? The best way to survive the frenzy is to prepare beforehand. The Milan icon design trail is back by popular demand and will offer much-needed solace. The build-up this year is more jittery than usual but there will still be brisk trade on the 220,000sq m fair ground, and the Zona Tortona promises plenty of activity as per usual. This year the sumptuous Villa Reale by the Giardini Pubblici will become a British hub with the British Design Embassy setting up home here, in a space curated by Paul Smith. Next door the multi screen film installation Love & Money – 50 years of creative Britain is showing. various venues, Milan www.iconeye.com/designtrail |

| ERIC OWEN MOSS ARCHITECTS: IF NOT NOW, WHEN? 10 APRIL - 14 JUNE This installation is inspired by two previous projects by LA-based Eric Owen Moss architects - the 1998 exhibition Fabrications and the Bondage tower in Los Angeles. The installation is dominated by a hanging cubic structure wrapped in ribbons and surrounded by folding chairs. It says it aims to examine the “grid-in-bondage” discourse - beats us but it looks good. Sci-Arc, Los Angeles www.sciarc.edu |
WILLIAM EGGLESTON, PARIS 4 APRIL - 21 JUNE American photographer William Eggleston has pointed his camera at anything from tricycles to fashion models in his 50-year career. Now the Fondation Cartier has commissioned him to capture Paris life, from its elegant boulevards to its gritty side streets. Let’s hope that his unique eye and famously colour-saturated snaps offer a 21st century alternative to all that misty-eyed and moody work of Brassaï. URBAN AGRICULTURE 9 APRIL - 30 MAY Londoners consume 6.9 million tonnes of food every year, 81 per cent of which is imported. With increased concern over the environmental impact of transporting food long distances and with a weaker pound it’s time to look into alternative ways of growing our food. This exhibition investigates the possibilities of urban agriculture and serves as an important reminder about an issue we all have to consider more carefully.
